Christmas at The Old Chapel

We had another jam packed December at The Old Chapel, starting on December the first as we kicked off Gotherington’s Living Advent Calendar with a partridge in a pear tree. The Old Chapel played host to a couple of wreath making groups with the wonderful Jane from the Wild Bunch Collective and we enjoyed a great Traditional Games Club where Alan and Shirley challenged all ages with more of their fun party games!

As we got closer to Christmas Day, there was a Film Club and then time for a quick round of family Bingo before Father Christmas arrived to meet a few families in his grotto on the mezzanine. To end the month the wonderful Peter Gill brought some of his Christmas favourites to The Old Chapel and really got us in the festive spirit.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in December and throughout 2023, we look forward to another fun packed year of activites in 2024!

A Very Generous Donation..

The Old Chapel trustees were informed last year that Ellis Boardman, who very sadly passed away in 2022, had left a donation to the Old Chapel in his will. We wanted to use the money for a specific project in the Old Chapel and it was decided to use it to purchase the much longed for curtains. The curtains have greatly improved the acoustics in the hall along with making a lovely feature of the mezzanine. Please do come in at some point and have a look! We are very grateful to Ellis for thinking of the Old Chapel and the support that he gave the project in it’s early stages.

We used Barbara’s Curtains of Gloucester for the bespoke curtains. - 01452 612118

Bingo in aid of the British Heart Foundation

We very sadly lost our friend and resident Bingo caller Colin Pilcher in 2023. We knew that Colin would want us to continue these evenings which he had made such a success. So with Colin’s wife Maggie giving her blessing, we ran the Christmas Bingo in aid of the British Heart Foundation. We raised over £200 and were also supported by The Shutter Inn who also very kindly made a donation to this very worthy cause. Maggie joined in with some of her grandchildren, we raised a glass to our dear friend Colin and had a fun evening…….just like Colin would have wanted.

We have been busy behind the scenes at The Old Chapel this summer. We have gained two new trustees from the village who are bringing fresh ideas and renewed energy to the project!

After a short break from some of our regular events, we are back this Autumn with a very busy calendar in the run up to Christmas!

Over the Summer we gained two new trustees from the village who are bringing fresh ideas and renewed energy to the project - welcome to Rob and Holly, it’s great to have you on the team! Rob is heading up the Gaming Afternoons, our once a month get together where children AND adults can enjoy challenging each other on various gaming platforms. Holly launched our very first ‘Build a Guy’ event at The Old Chapel which was such fun and definitely something we will be adding to our annual events calendar going forward!

We are really excited to be able to share details of all our regular activities and special upcoming events on the ‘What’s On’ page of our new website here. Booking details are all listed so you don’t miss out! Many thanks to the creative abilities of Jenna at Halcyon Designs, who came up with the style and framework for our website and gave us the skills to carry it forward! We love it and are sure that others will too! Do let us know if you have any feedback on the website or any of our activities!

Build a Guy!

We hosted our very first ‘Build a Guy’ event ahead of the village’s Bonfire and Fireworks Party held on Freeman Field. Families came along to The Old Chapel, with outfits and accessories for their Guys and had fun stuffing the heads and bodies full of hay. As facial features were added and hair was trimmed, the Guys and ‘Gal’ came to life and looked fabulous all lined up.

New Tiles for the Old Chapel

Before building work commenced on The Old Chapel we launched our crowdfunder ‘New Tiles for the Old Chapel’ to help cover some of the costs and allow us to get as much of the internal works done during the renovation as possible.

Before building work commenced on The Old Chapel we launched our crowdfunder ‘New Tiles for the Old Chapel’ to help cover some of the costs and allow us to get as much of the internal works done during the renovation as possible.

As work began on the roof, and the old tiles and trusses were removed, villagers started sponsoring tiles and signing them before they were fitted. Thanks once again to the amazing support from neighbours, family and friends, we managed to raise over £4,000!!!

The local support shown for The Old Chapel Community Project has proven the love people have for this building, and together we will ensure it remains open to the community for generations to come.

Here are some of our wonderful neighbours who sponsored the new tiles, helping to raising an additional £4,000!
